We recently received this question in our inbox, thank you to one of our followers for this question because we are pretty sure this is a question a lot of us have.
If you live in Africa at some point in time your hair dresser has given you an OT aka oil treatment, where they slap some Dark & lovely/ORS product in your hair and put you under a hooded drier for 5-10min
This is exactly the same thing as deep conditioning, you slap on your deep conditioner put on a shower cap then sit for 10+min. Same procedure different names. What you may want to look out for are the types of products being put in your hair by your hairdresser. Don’t be shy to ask what product it is and what it works for.
On the other hand we have what is called hot oil treatment. This is when you warm up your oils eg olive oil, castor oil, coconut oil, avocado oil etc and place them in your hair under a shower cap for 10+ min
Hot oil treatments are good for providing hair with strength, thickness and softness while deep conditioning with frequent use Infuse moisture, strength, softness, smoothness and also helps repair damaged hair.
Can hot oil treatments be used instead of deep conditioners? We wouldnt encourage this. Both are equally just as important and provide different benefits to the hair. What you can do is incorporate your hot oil treatment into your deep conditioning eg add your favorite oils into your deep conditioners. Killing 2 birds with one stone.
We hope this answers your question 🙂
